After many years of working with clay, I decided to change to paper clay for the majority of my work. The consistency of paper clay allows for quicker drying and easier repair. In our dry New Mexico climate, I can dry a piece outside in the sun, add wet paper clay to the dry and continue to build pieces at my leisure. The wet to dry clay process allows for spontaneity of design that allows me to change my mind about a piece without starting over.
My inspiration comes from everywhere, from life’s experiences, the New Mexico flora and fauna and from other artists’ work. My inspiration for the Serenity Posts came from a “fence” exhibit at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Although I have dramatically changed the design to make it my own, I still have a warm feeling for the artist who inspired me.
